November 27- December 1

After being gone on bed rest for 6 weeks, it is SO good to be back at school with my KinderKids! I was over the moon to see them on Monday and I think they felt the same. :)
With a busy first week of school, I forgot to take public 'no faces' pics of the work we were doing this week so parents, please check our private Shutterfly.

This week in reading, we read 'Scarecrow' by Cynthia Rylant. We worked on new vocabulary and we practiced inferring knowledge from the story. We created a tree map about scarecrows- 'scarecrows can, scarecrows are, and scarecrows have'.  We were able to read together in guided reading groups and students began taking home their 'Bookworm Bags' to practice at home. So exciting!

In math this week we continued working on composing and decomposing numbers. I have one student that will gleefully tell me that 'decompose' is his favorite word every time. I just love kindergarteners! We wrapped up our unit with a post-test on Friday. We are looking forward to beginning our new unit on numbers 11-20 on Monday.

This week in writing, we concluded our week by writing our very first story! We have been working hard on mechanics of writing- capital letters, spacing, and periods- with a pre-writing mini-lesson each day. On Thursday we began our stories about a scarecrow friend coming to life! It was complete silence as the students worked, your little authors did such a fabulous job! We love to dim the lights, turn on our 'writing lightbox sign' and listen to classical music as we work. Look for those to come home next week.

Happy December!
